We Need a Definitive ROI on E2.0 / ESN

After attending some sessions on Enterprise 2.0 it became pretty clear that the industry needs a definitive ROI analysis on E2.0 / ESN (enterprise social networking).  This lack of research is holding back the growth of deployments because many CFOs are saying no to anything that does not have a clear payback.  This analysis will not be easy nor inexpensive and once it is completed (by an independent source) it would go a long way towards making these technologies more mainstream within enterprises.

The good news is that in about two years, ROI analysis will probably not be required because E2.0 / ESN will be used by enough companies that the late adopters will feel like they need to use it just to keep up.  My backup for this assertion:  think about the adoption of email and web pages – they followed similar paths.
